World’s biggest source of antioxidants: Coffee
You know you see it all the time about how important it is to consume the right foods that contain good amounts of antioxidants. They are always pointing to a variety of fruits and vegetables and other foods that are suppose to be full of antioxidants, however, rarely do you hear about what seems to be the best kept secret around and that is coffee is the world’s biggest source of antioxidants you can find. That’s right, that morning cup of coffee that provides you with that burst of caffeine you think you need may be also offering you the best source of those disease fighting antioxidants we’re always hearing about.
There are studies that have discovered that coffee offers the world’s biggest source of antioxidants that anyone can include in their diet. Without even knowing it, Americans who drink coffee on a regular basis are getting more of their antioxidants from their coffee consumption than they are getting from anything else that they might be including in their diets. According to researchers, there is nothing that can compare or come even close to the amount of antioxidants that this simple little coffee bean has to offer making coffee the world’s biggest source of antioxidants.
Antioxidants as most people already know can be found quite naturally in a variety of different foods and drinks and are believed by the medical field that these antioxidants provide a variety of health benefits which help in preventing various disease like heart disease as well as cancer. They do this by fighting against damage of the cells that is caused by what they call free radicals that are found in the body. These free radicals are extremely damaging substances that seem to be produced by normal bodily processes that we can’t avoid. However with coffee being the world’s biggest source of antioxidants, one can consume this dark beverage and help their bodies fight off these free radicals and their damage.
Until recently medical professionals have all agreed that the best place one can find antioxidants are in the fruits and vegetables that we eat. They have for many years been hailed as the richest sources for antioxidants, however, more recently it has been discovered that coffee now is the world’s biggest source of antioxidants.
Through various studies it has been discovered that the high antioxidant levels of certain foods and beverages doesn’t always mean that there will be high levels of these antioxidants in a persons body. It seems that it all depends on how these antioxidants are absorbed and then used by the body. But through studies that were based on the antioxidant content per serving size and how often consumed, coffee ended up on top even over tea, fruit and chocolate.
With coffee now being the world’s biggest source of antioxidants the rest that follow closely behind and are some of the more popular with people are the following:
- Black tea
- Dried beans
- Red wine
- Lager style beer
With coffee being the number one choice now for antioxidant content some people who don’t especially care for the caffeine in coffee don’t have to worry since researchers say that it doesn’t matter. It seems the caffeine has nothing to do with the antioxidant content so drinking decaf will give you the same benefits as drinking coffee with caffeine when it comes to antioxidants. However, medical professionals say that this news about this special benefit of coffee should not be an excuse to increase their intake of coffee. Just like anything else even too much of a good thing can be bad.
The reason one should not think that by increasing their coffee consumption is going to help their health is not practical is due to the fact that even though the coffee gives us a lot of antioxidants it still is lacking in total nutrition. This means the other items on the list should still be in high consumption because they also provide our bodies with vitamins, minerals and fibers that it requires to maintain good health.
